LAHORE: The Dolphin Force personnel reportedly shot dead a man said to be mentally ill after he attacked and injured five people with a knife in Lahore’s Sabzazar area on Saturday.
According to the police, the knife-wielding man, identified as Umair, injured four people, including a woman, in the provincial capital’s Sabzazar neighbourhood.
A contingent of the Dolphin Force reached the spot and tried to get a hold of the knife-attacker when he also stabbed a constable, Mubbashir, injuring him. In retaliation, the personnel opened fire at the man, resulting in his death on the spot.
The SP Saddar said the attacker, who he said was a mentally ill, was attacking passers-by in the area.
He said the Dolphin Force personnel reached the spot of the incident after a call was received on the Helpline 15, alerting the police about the knife-wielding man injuring people.
Later, relatives of the deceased placed his body on the road, protesting against the force. However, the police baton-charged them and opened the road to traffic.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Operations has sought a final report of the incident and directed his subordinates to ensure a thorough investigation into it.
