Fifth death anniversary of Salman Taseer today

Salman Taseer was born on 31st May 1944 to M.D. Taseer and Bilquees Taseer.

He was elected as Member of Punjab Assembly after emerging victorious in 1988 general elections.

He was appointed Punjab Governor on 15th May 2008 by former President Pervez Musharraf and remained on the post till his death.

Taseer was a strong crtic of the blasphemy law made in the martial law reign of former President General Zia-ul-Haq and harshly spoke against its misuse. He had termed it as a “black law”.

On 4th January 2011, one of his bodyguards named Mumtaz Qadri shot dead Salman Taseer over his opinion on the blasphemy law at Islamabad’s F-6 area.

He was awarded death sentence over killing the former Punjab Government. The convict had challenged the verdict in the Supreme Court of Pakistan which was later rejected. He is in death cell waiting for the execution of his sentence.
