Government decides to set up gas-based power projects

The project will add 5600 Mega Watt (MW) of electricity in the system.

The final decision of initiating the projects was taken in the meeting of a ministerial committee headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and comprising Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Water and Power Minister Khwaja Mohammad Asif.

The project is divided into two stages.

In the initial stage power plants will be built in Hyderabad and Sukkur, that will start generating 2,000 MW from May this year. And, in the second stage, 3,600MW power plants would be set up in Punjab’s load centres where transmission lines are already available. The projects will be based on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG).
