Karachi: JI to intensify their Power Protest by holding sit-ins today

KARACHI: Maintaining their call of protest, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has announced to hold sit-ins at 50 different spots in Karachi on Saturday (today), ARY News reported.

Emir JI Karachi Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said that the party wanted to hold a peaceful demonstration on electricity over-billing by K-Electric, the power utility of Karachi, but the city administration barred the party activists to lodge a peaceful protest yesterday (Friday).

“The party has decided to further intensify the protest by holding sit-ins at 50 different spots across the city”, he added.

He also announced a historic demonstration in front of K-Electric headquarters on April 7 (next Friday).

It is worth mentioning here that police arrested several JI activists in the wake of a protest call against power load-shedding and electricity over-billing by K-Electric.

While refusing to permit JI to hold a protest sit-in, district administration Karachi East yesterday said that the party would be responsible for any kind of loss and chaos during the protest.

Earlier, the JI Karachi chief had announced to march towards Shahrah-e-Faisal, the main traffic artery of the city, to protest against the power supply firm K-Electric’s alleged over-billing. More than a dozen other workers were also arrested from outside Jamaat e Islami headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq, just before they were set to leave for the protest point.

In the wake of protest call, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman was also briefly taken into custody by police officials to disperse the party activists.

While talking to ARY News yesterday, Rehman had declared all preventive measures by police and city administration, in bid to subjugate their protest, as ‘unjust’ as what he believed the party was bringing forth public stance on the issue.
