ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fined the candidates of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for violating its code of conduct for NA-154 Lodhran by-polls.
The commission imposed a fine of Rs40,000 on PTI’s Ali Tareen while Rs30,000 on PML-N candidate Pir Syed Iqbal Shah.
Both candidates were found guilty of flouting the code of conduct for the by-polls by arranging for members of the parliament to canvass for votes in the constituency.
They were fined as per relevant provisions of the Election Act 2017.
The ECP had earlier issued notices to PTI chief Imran Khan and others to appear before its regional election commissioner for violating its code of conduct for NA-154 polls.
As many as 10 candidates are in the run for the NA seat, which fell vacant after the Supreme Court disqualified the PTI leader under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution on December 15.
The PTI has fielded Tareen’s son Ali Tareen as its candidate, whereas Pir Iqbal Shah is contesting the by-polls on the ticket of the ruling PML-N.
Jahangir Tareen was de-seated for deliberately submitting a false statement in the Supreme Court to conceal his property in the United Kingdom.
