ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday received Foreign Minister of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Asim who briefed on the political developments in the island nation.
The foreign minister is on an official visit to Pakistan as the special envoy of the President of Maldives. He briefed on the developments that led to the declaration of a state of emergency in his country, and reaffirmed Maldives’ support to Pakistan’s initiatives for bringing peace and stability in the region.
PM Abbasi highlighted that the relations between Pakistan and Maldives are characterised by cordiality, mutual respect and commonality of interests, and expressed satisfaction over the trajectory of brotherly bilateral relations.
The prime minister stated that Pakistan firmly adheres to the policy of non-interference in the affairs of other countries and will continue to adhere to the principles of the United Nations charter in this regard.
The foreign minister of Maldives appreciated Pakistan for its support to the people and the government of Maldives, and thanked for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to him.

Embattled Maldives President sent envoy to friendly nations
The embattled president of Maldives Abdulla Yameen has sent envoys to friendly nations such as China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to brief them on a political crisis in the Indian Ocean nation that spurred the imposition of a state of emergency.
Yameen left out key regional power India, which had joined Britain, the United States and the United Nations in calling for the lifting of the emergency and the freeing of two Supreme Court judges whose ruling against him sparked new instability.
Maldives has been in crisis since last week, when the Supreme Court quashed convictions ranging from corruption to terrorism against nine opposition figures, including former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Tension came to a head when Yameen’s government rejected the ruling, imposed the emergency for 15 days on Monday and then arrested the chief justice and another judge of the court.
