Man arrested over throwing acid on her wife in Lahore

LAHORE: Police claimed to have arrested a man who threw acid on her wife during a domestic fight in Lahore, ARY News reported on Wednesday.

Lahore police personnel have nabbed a man, Waheed, during a raid conducted over the complaint of acid attack occurred in Shahdara neighbourhood of the provincial capital of Punjab.

According to police, Waheed went furious over her wife during a fight over a minor domestic issue and attacked her by throwing acid on her. 60 per cent of the victim’s body was affected by the acid and she was currently under treatment in Mayo Hospital, police added.

Police said that the department has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident as the prime suspect of the acid attack is taken into custody.

Earlier on March 21, an Anti-Terrorism Court had handed a man 14 years’ jail sentence for hurling acid at a woman after she refused his proposal of marriage.

The court found accused Danish guilty of the offence and awarded him 14 years imprisonment and also ordered him to pay Rs. 8,00,000 Diyat to the victim of the attack.

In case of non-payment of diyat, the convict will undergo further imprisonment, the court said in its verdict.

The ATC Judge however acquitted three other accused Malik Qurban, Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Ashraf.

Acid Attacks

Acid attack is a form of violent assault defined as the act of throwing acid or a harmful substance onto the body of another with the intention to disfigure, maim, torture, or kill. Mostly the women remain the victims of attackers who usually throw harmful liquids at faces of their victims, to disfigure them.

The acid attacks are reported in many parts of the world, though more likely in developing countries. These attacks occur all over the world but they are most common in South Asian countries Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
