KARACHI: With the help of Interpol, law enforcement agencies have arrested former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member and Baldia Town tragedy suspect Raees Mamma in Malaysia, sources told ARY News on Saturday.
According to ARY News correspondent, Raees Mamma, a wanted suspect in a number of cases including the 2012 Baldia Town Tragedy was arrested in Malaysia and will soon be brought to Karachi.
Reports in the media said that Raees Mamma had left for Dubai after the arrest of another former MQM member Saeed alias Bharam during the Rangers operation in Karachi.
In 2014, then MQM Leader and current MQM-Pakistan chief Farooq Sattar publicly disowned Raees Mamma during a TV talk show.
In October this year, another Baldia Town tragedy suspect, MQM’s former Karachi Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui, was arrested in Dubai. Later in December, sources said that he was handed over to authorities in Pakistan and is currently in detention.
Hammad Siddiqui was working as the in-charge of the Karachi Tanzeemi Committee (KTC) of MQM, however his party membership was suspended in 2013 for violating discipline, following which Siddiqui had moved to UAE.
In 2016, an anti-terrorism court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for accused Hammad Siddiqui in Baldia Factory Fire case.
Baldia factory fire
Nearly 250 people burnt to death after a horrific blaze erupted in the factory in September 2012. The government formed a JIT to thoroughly investigate the incident, which had later made startling revelations.
“The fire that had engulfed the factory was an outcome of a pre-planned scheme and that it was no accident,” revealed the JIT report. “The factory was set ablaze over non-payment of Bhatta – protection money.”
Sources said the JIT report stated that MQM sector in-charge Rehman alias Bhola and Hammad Siddiqui had demanded Rs 200 million extortion from owners of the factory.
