ISLAMABAD:Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday dispelled the impression the government was attempting to place restrictions on social media, but warned that strict action will be taken against posting slanderous content against the Pakistan Army and judiciary.
The interior minister addressing a press conference said that social media will made progress but there is no check and balance. He said that no one can be allowed to malign the institutions of Pakistan on the pretext of freedom of speech and expression.
“We do not intend to place ban on social media, but some red lines are being placed as per the law and constitution of Pakistan,” he said warning that the country’s laws cannot be flouted openly on social media.
He said the constitution of Pakistan states that action should be taken against those defaming the sanctity of the armed forces and judiciary. He was adamant that action will be taken against those irrespective of political affiliations.
He claimed such incidents have reduced after some social media activists were summoned to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for questioning and forensic tests of their laptops will be held before action is taken.
He also warned those decrying the misuse of cyber crime laws and threatening to take to the streets over the the alleged intimidation and harassment of social media activists.
Nisar also said that there should be code of conduct for social media, and proposed developing standard operating procedure (SOP) with social media organisations.
