KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar on Friday rebuked authorities for tormenting public with expensive petroleum products while ordering a review of the mechanism of determining POL prices and levying taxes.
CJP took up the hearing of a suo moto case against the petroleum prices and imposition of additional taxes.
In his orders of conducting a review of petroleum taxes and prices, Chief Justice Nisar warned of severe consequences if any irregularity is found in the review report. He also directed to incorporate the details of commission being given to dealers in the required report.
In a question pertaining to the policy of
charging public for transportation, the managing director of Pakistan States Oil (PSO) informed CJP that policies are chalked out by Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). Whereas, OGRA dismissed PSO’s claim and stated that the government is responsible for devising the policy of pricing.READ MORE: CJP censures authorities over additional taxes on POL products
Disapproving the statements of PSO and OGRA officials, CJP criticized both institutions for not taking accountability and playing a ‘blame game’ about the issue of surging petroleum prices.
