President signs Protection of Pakistan Bill into law

The bill was passed in the National Assembly and the Senate and waiting for presidential signature to become a law.

The law allows security forces to detain suspects for up to 60 days without revealing their whereabouts or allegations against them.

The law also allows security forces to shoot suspects on sight with the permission of a grade-15 official. According to the law, the order to shoot a person on suspicion will come only from an official of a law-enforcement agency or a police officer of grade-15 or above.

The legislation has become law for two years.

The law passed through the National Assembly and Senate after the government accomodated several opposition amendments in the legislation.
