ISLAMABAD: Incensed by the arrest of retired Captain Muhammad Safdar after his arrival at the Islamabad airport along with his wife Maryam Nawaz, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique took to Twitter to give vent to his anger, reminding what treatment was being meted out to “benefactor of the country and nation.”
Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of the ousted prime minister, landed at Benazir Bhutto International Airport along with her spouse Capt retired Muhammad Safdar, who was arrested by NAB minutes after their arrival in the early hours of Monday morning.
Maryam and her spouse returned to Pakistan to join the graft trial being conducted by an accountability court, Islamabad, in connection with a reference related to the Sharif family’s flats in a posh London neighbuorhood.
Reacting to Safdar’s arrest, the minister said, “It has been our unfortunate and unpleasant tradition to hatch conspiracies and insult the benefactors of the country and nation.”
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon, who is facing graft cases in Sindh, lost no time to make a retort.
He reminded the minister how he was taken into custody from the runway, despite the fact that he had obtained bail from a court in the cases.
Tweeting from his official account Memon said, “Khawaja sb, remember I had [obtained] bail, NAB arrested me from runway with help of your government? Today you stopped them to enter in the airport.”
Maryam Nawaz had been in London, looking after her ailing mother Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, receiving treatment for throat cancer.
She had departed for London shortly after her ailing mother won the by-election in NA-120 constituency vacated after the disqualification of her father by the Supreme Court.
