Sindh govt bans energy drinks, snacks at schools

KARACHI: The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has imposed a ban on certain food items including carbonated drinks and snacks/chips at canteens across schools and colleges of the province.

The letter in this regard was issued by the director general Sindh Food Authority.

The SFA also banned other food items which are mentioned in the notification below:

The food authority also issued strict orders against the sale and purchase of meat of new born calves and the use of artificial colours in sweetmeat (mithai).

The letter was also sent to Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, president Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chairman All Pakistan Restaurant Association, chairman Pakistan Hotel Association, administrator market committee Sindh, PS to chief secretary Sindh, PS to secretary food Sindh and others.

The SFA was made functional in March this year after the Sindh Assembly had passed into law the Sindh Food Authority Act, 2017.

At the time of formation, the authority was tasked to make necessary arrangements within one month to ensure availability of quality food items including dairy and bakery products, beef, mutton, vegetables, cooking oil and other edible items cooked in a hygienic environment in hotels and restaurants.

Giving details of the SFA, Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro had said that the authority would ensure quality by starting checking of big and small hotels, restaurants, mega marts, department stores, food industries products, bakery items, dairy, meat and beef shops.
