LAHORE: A suicide blast at Bedian Road of Lahore leave at least six people dead, including four military soldiers and two government employees involved in the ongoing population Census, ARY News reported on Wednesday.
At least 22 people were also injured in the attack. The security forces confirmed that the blast at Bedian Road, which was earlier being considered a cylinder blast, was a suicide attack.
The suicide bomber detonated his explosives near a van carrying census personnel. Around eight to 10 kilograms of explosives were used in the attack, Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) sources said.
Rescue teams reached to the site soon after the incident and the injured were shifted to General Hospital and Combined Military Hospital (CMH). Four injured said to be in a precarious condition.
Police and security agencies have cordoned off an area of one kilometer radius along the crime scene and initiated investigation of the incident.
Forensic teams have also reached the spot to collect the evidence. CTD team has found the head of alleged suicide bomber from the spot. The CTD sources have further confirmed that it was suicide blast.
The explosion partially damaged vehicles parked nearby and adjacent buildings. The census process in the area has been suspended temporarily.
Census is a national obligation: Gen. Bajwa
Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qammar Javed Bawa had strongly condemned the blast and said that soldiers and enumerators who embraced martyrdom were on the national obligation of census duty.
In a statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations, the Army Chief said the loss of precious lives is a great sacrifice beyond any doubt.
He vowed that the census will be completed at any cost and the sacrifices will strengthen their resolve with the support of the entire nation to cleanse the menace of terrorism.
“My heart goes to bereaved families and my highest tributes to Martyrs who laid their lives in the line of duty,” said the Army Chief.
